Types of membership

Full membership – Annual fee £50

For professional writers/authors/commissioning editors in any medium, who spend the majority of their working time covering health issues and who uphold the aims of the Guild of Health Writers. The benefits include free or special discounted entry to Guild events, listing in and free copy of Guild Membership Directory along with a free copy of our bi-monthly newsletter. Voting rights are available to Full Members only. Members should declare any commercial interests on their application form and agree to abide by the Constitution of the Guild of Health Writers and its Code of Ethics, and to support its Aims and Objectives.  

Associate Membership – Annual fee £50

For professionals in other fields, e.g. medical practitioners/therapists who are also established writers/authors/broadcasters, or journalists in any medium who spend a significant part of their time on health and medical matters. The benefits include free or discounted entry to Guild events, listing in and free copy of Guild Membership Directory, free copy of the Newsletter. Associate Members should declare any commercial interests on their application form and agree to abide by the Constitution of the Guild of Health Writers and its Code of Ethics, and to support its Aims and Objectives.  

How to apply for Full/Associate Membership

  1. Complete every section of the application form: 2020 GHW Membership Application Form
  2. Please email the completed form together with three samples of work published or broadcast (URLs or PDFs of articles) within the last 6 months if applying for Full Membership or within the last 12 months if applying for Associate Membership. If you have no recent examples of work (because, for instance, you’ve been furloughed, or on maternity leave) please mention this in the current status box on the membership form and we will take this into account.  Email to admin@healthwriters.com 
  3. Your membership fee of £50 can be paid online once your memerbship has been approved.

Your completed application will be forwarded to our Membership Secretary once received by the Guild office.

Student membership – Annual fee £12

For full-time students studying journalism who may wish to specialise in health and medical matters. The benefits include entry to Guild events and a free copy of the Newsletter. Student Members should declare any commercial interests on their application form and agree to abide by the Constitution of the Guild of Health Writers and its Code of Ethics, and to support its Aims and Objectives.

How to apply for student membership

  1. Complete every section of the application form: 2020 GHW Student Membership
  2. Email the completed form to the Guild office –  admin@healthwriters.com 
  3. Your membership fee of £12 can be paid online once your membership has been approved.

Your completed application will be forwarded to our Membership Secretary once received by the Guild office.

How to become a Friend of the Guild

Friends of the Guild of Health Writers are those working in the health area who support the aims of the Guild, but who do not fulfil the writing criteria necessary for membership. Friends might be PRs, healthcare professional and charities. Friends of the Guild of Health Writers are not members of the Guild of Health Writers.

  1. Complete the application form: 2020 GHW Friends Subscrption Form
  2. Email the completed form to the Guild office –  admin@healthwriters.com 
  3. Please pay the appropriate subscription directly to the Guild’s account – details on the form.
